James O. Cox Outstanding Member Award
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS 2007 - 2008

Annually, NAPM Houston recognizes a member who performs outstanding
service to NAPM Houston, exemplifying professionalism both on the job and
within the community.  In 1953 the “Outstanding Member of the Year Award”
was created to acknowledge the accomplishments of this person and in 1972,
it became known as the “James O. Cox Outstanding Member of the Year Award.”

A nominee for the James O. Cox Award must be a regular member of
NAPM-Houston, Inc. for a minimum of ten consecutive years, must have served
either as a voting member of the Board of Directors for at least 2 consecutive years
or been Chair of a committee or combination of committees for at least 3 years.
If a voting board member, he/she must have attended at least 7 of 10 board
meetings in the same year.  A sitting President is not eligible for this award
during their presidential year. The nominee must have a.) demonstrated leadership
and managerial capabilities, b.) performed their assigned tasks, and c.) attended a
majority of the General Meetings.

Nominations for the 2007 – 08 James O. Cox Award will be accepted through the
General Meeting on April 8, 2008.  A nomination form is posted on the association’s

2006 - 2007 James O. Cox Outstanding Member of the Year

The James O. Cox Outstanding Member Award for 2006-2007 was presented to
Marian T. Nimon, C.P.M. on June 12, 2007 during the 87th Installation of Officers.
Lin Peterson, C.P.M., A.P.P., Chairman of the James O. Cox Outstanding Member
Award Committee, made the presentation at the Sheraton Brookhollow.

Marian began her career in purchasing while living in Michigan in the 1980s.
When she moved to Houston she gained employment with The University of Texas
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.  There she manages the HUB and Federal Small
Business Program, providing excellent service, leadership, and mentoring
relationships, as evidenced by her numerous accomplishments and awards.
Marian has been married for 32 years to Harry Nimon, Jr. and has four children:
Gloria, Jessica, Paul, and Veronica.  Marian’s family is close-knit and they have all
made education and volunteerism priorities.

Marian joined NAPM-Houston in1995 and became active in the Minority Business
Program, now known as the Supplier Diversity Group.  Over the years, Marian has
served on the following committee’s:  Mini Trade Fair, School Partnership, Health
Care Buyer’s Group, and Special Activities Committee.  Marian also served as
Director at Large, Local Director, and Southwest Purchasing Conference Exhibit
Chair.  In 2003 Marian became NAPM-Houston’s 83rd president.  In her spare time
that year she completed her M.B.A.

In addition to being active in NAPM-Houston, Marian is an participating member of
the Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance, the Houston Minority Business Council,
The Women Contractor’s Association, and the Asian Chamber of Commerce, as well
as a graduate of Leadership Houston Class XVIII. 

Marian’s numerous awards throughout her career include the following:

  • Mentor of the Year award by the Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance
  • The Small Business Administration’s Women in Business Advocate of the Year
  • The Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Advocate of the Year 
  • Professional Services Advocate of the Year from The Houston Minority Business Council
  • Advocate of the Year from The Houston Minority Business Council
  • Helping Hand Award from the Houston Minority Business Council
  • Coordinator of the Year from The Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance
  • Cutting Edge Award from the Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance
  • Group purchasing organization Premier’s National Supplier Diversity Award
  • Program recipient of the Small Business Administration’s Dwight D. Eisenhower Award of Excellence for Research and Development
  • ISM’s Charles M. McDonald Award for supplier diversity excellence, presented at the 92nd Annual International Supply Management conference, for exemplary contributions in minority and women’s business development in 2007. 

     

Marian devotes much time and effort to her volunteer duties.  Her performance
continues to be extraordinary and is a shining example of professionalism.
